A Reader Writes Against Circumcision: My reply

There is one comment I received that I rejected, for the simple reason that it contained profanity. Printing a comment is a package deal. The only thing I can do to edit a comment is to cut and paste from my e mail, which is what I have done here. One individual wrote to me to propose a complete ban on circumcision. Minus the profanities, I have printed his letter in its entirety. Because it is somewhat personal, I even changed the initials. The letter is as follows

C---- E---- has left a new comment on your post "Danish Ban on Circumcision: The Debate Continues":

So what happens when the children grow up and do not share the faith of their parents?

There are many jewish atheists, why should they be made to suffer from the decisions of their parents to mutilate them?

And yes it is mutilation, go look at the dictionary definition of the word. The damage is irreparable.

If no religions had circumcision rituals and the church of scientology announced that in order to really be a member of the faith one had to get circumcised and have their children circumcised the state would take the kids away.

Have the vision to see outside of the perspective of your own religion and culture. I freakin hate my parents because they did this to me. Let children make up their own minds as to whether or not they want to take this step to be a part of the faith.

There are 20,000 nerve endings in the foreskin, there are only 4,000 nerve endings in the head of the penis and a total of 40,000 nerve endings overall in the penis. All that sensation, gone. In effect parents are choosing to decrease the sexual sensation of their own children, I think of only a few things parents can do that are more @#$%^& &* than that.

Circumcision has been around for thousands of years. It is not a recent medical innovation. Jewish law requires circumcision at eight days of age when medically possible. To ask that it be delayed is like forcing a child to eat non kosher food until old enough to request otherwise. There are ample medical benefits that can be cited in defense of circumcision. You will be able to cite medical sources opposing circumcision. I don't want to go down that road. The bottom line is that any ban on circumcision is a war against Judaism. Period. I think that most people who oppose circumcision know that. It might even be a selling point for a circumcision ban.

Parents make decisions for children until they are old enough to make up their own minds. That's life. Circumcision is one of those decisions. I am sorry to hear of your anger towards your parents. I have met people whose politics and religion I totally disagreed with who were great parents. And I have met those who I agreed with down the line who fought terribly with their children. I used to be an atheist and an admirer of Madelyn Murray, the late atheist preacher. When I was in high school, I thought she would be a really cool mom. When I heard her berate and hang up on her own son who became a born again Christian, it drove home to me that she had the desire to control others and had become doctrinaire in her own way. These are personal qualities that transcend religious boundaries. I would be very surprised if your parent's decision to circumcise you was the sole blemish upon an idyllic childhood. It would be good to identify other factors that put you at odds with them. Although therapy is often a venue for such enlightenment, getting older and wiser helps as well. Hopefully, understanding comes before one has children of one's own.

The Amish have books of the stories of their martyrs. The Huguenots also have a similar literary tradition. Those who sought in past generations to ban circumcision figure prominently in the collective Jewish memory passed from generation. If you attempt to step into the shoes of circumcision's opponents , you will be fought with zeal and determination by a nation that has survived every empire that tried to eradicate it. Please believe me when I say that my feelings are every bit as strong as yours on this matter. If you wish to raise your family based upon your principles, then I wish you well. I hope you wish me the same. Sphere: Related Content

". . . any ban on circumcision a war against Judaism." How asinine a presumption! The Jews have no monopoly on circumcision, although it would be better for the world's males if they did. The Jewish people have no more right to torture their children than anyone else does. A disgusting and blind tradition, religiously inspired or not.

You brought up the point yourself. Moslems practice circumcision. I want to see you go picket a mosque and protest circumcision when they are leaving after Friday Jumuah services. I am going to laugh all over myself when you get a royal beat down. I hope they put it on funniest home videos!!
